Author: Carole Brown

Genre: Historical romantic suspense

Release Date: October 15, 2020

From childhood up, Claire Anne Rayner has despised the man who’s like a brother and son to the rest of the Rayner House residents. But when she puts her musical training on hold and begins singing to the troops as a means of helping support and encourage them, she is pulled into a mysterious spy’s efforts to destroy a certain high-ranking man.

Wills Mason is loved by everyone but Claire who cannot forgive him for his and her sister’s unmerciful, youthful teasing. But now, grown up and serving as a civilian spy, Wills must prove that Claire is not willingly relaying messages to the enemy, as his colonel believes, even when all evidence points that way. And can he prove he’s changed and can be trusted to cherish her heart as she deserves to be loved?

A Grip on the Story by Carole Brown

Unlike books one and two of The Spies of WWII series (With Music in Their Hearts and A Flute in the Willows), I couldn’t get a handle on where to go with Claire Anne Rayner and Wills Mason’s story in Sing Until You Die. I knew their names, knew their careers, but the plot evaded me until it was time to write the novel. And then…

Slowly the plot opened up:

  • How Claire was using her career
  • What was being asked of Wills by his colonel
  • The conflict between the two main protagonists
  • The protagonists’ personalities
  • Who the spy was
  • Why revenge was being sought by the foreign spy

The more I wrote, the more I loved these two faulty, but loveable characters. Were they perfect? No. Were they determined to do what they felt was their duty, what they knew was their calling? Yes and yes.

Claire, as a child and teenager, faced thoughtless and sometimes cruel teasings because of over zealousness from certain family and friends. In her youthful mind, she felt loathing for those hurting her and knew she’d never forgive those involved.

Wills, on the otherhand, as a youth, was bound to prove he was one better than his best friend. Nothing was too dangerous or too extreme for him to try. No matter how others might feel…

Yet, through loving family and friends, these two grew into adulthood as caring, serious, and individuals determined to succeed in their separate pursuits. The only thing they needed to do was ask for forgiveness and forgive. Could they lay aside their accusations for each other and do it? Would they realize that past feelings and thoughts about the other might just be wrong?

I worked hard at showing the slow and sometimes painful process of their achieving that. But tying in the insidious spy, thrust these two adorable, but different, characters into each others’ lives. That brings about the question:

Will the web of deceit the mysterious German spy is weaving destroy their one chance of happiness with each other, or can they both let go of the past and work together to bring the spy to justice?

Author Interview

How did you get started in writing?

I’ve always loved writing, research and the English language! In grade school, classmates clapped when I gave a Show-and-Tell or dramatically retold a tale. In high school, one of my best friends and I sat through study halls creating solemn woes of death, forlorn lost loves, and other tragic events in life. In college I delighted in research papers while those around me groaned at the prospect.

My first, remembered creation was in sixth grade when my teacher assigned us a paper to do: a week-long journal of a caveman and his family. How I wish I still had that document although I’d probably cringe now reading it. But at least I could hang in somewhere to remind myself of how far I’ve come.

That desire to write never left me. I dabbled in newsletters and other things, took classes, and finally realized it was time to begin in earnest with my fiction writing. From then on, till I gained my first contract…and now after eleven full-length novels, I’ve not stopped. I’ve published two books this year—finishing the third book in one series (The Spies of WWII), and began a new historical western series (Troubles in the West), and finished a third book (Book Five in the Appleton, WV Romantic Mystery series that should be out by Spring 2021—and plan on at least two or three more next year.

Writing and being an author is the best career in the world!

What is one thing you hope readers will take away from your story?

Claire Anne Rayner, one of the protagonists, hangs onto her dislike and despicableness of the man who grew up in her household, who, along beside one of her sisters, teased and tormented her unmercifully. But when Claire finally realizes that people change, that some are not as before and that God can change them, she finds herself wondering if she misjudged him.

Forgiveness is a big theme, and one that most everyone has had to learn to do. It’s a key to each individuals true happiness.

What advice can you give to writers trying to break into the publishing world?

Learn, learn, learn. Take classes, study writing that interests you, find writing partners who will critique kindly and honestly—each step puts you a step closer to publication.

Don’t wear your feelings on your sleeve. When I first began seriously writing, a critique partner gave me a critique that hurt my feelings. I sulked about a week, but with encouragement from another team member, I swallowed my pride and accepted her suggestion. SHE was right. That is a lesson, I’ve never forgotten, and it’s helped me grow in my writing, my attitude, and in helping others

Last, never, never quit! This is important. You’re going to get discouraged. Tough places will come where you’ll feel defeated, ready to give up and angry at things that don’t work out or at people who seem to not care for your work or even dislike it. Shrug it off. Pray, straighten your shoulders and dig in deeper. If you truly want to be a writer—never quit! No matter what. Everyone’s writing journey is different. Claim yours and never quit!

What do you plan to work on next?

I plan on:

  • As I mentioned earlier, Book Five of my Appleton, WV cozy romantic/mystery series (The Golden Touch) is scheduled for release sometime in the Spring.
  • The first book in my new Nursery Ryhme series (Run As Fast as You Can) should release late 2021. It’s a serious romantic suspense.
  • Book Three (set at Christmas time) of my Denton and Alex Davies cozy mystery series (Daffy’s Duck) should release the last part of 2021. This is a fun mystery series that deals with a traveling middle-aged couple with their pet dog. They love reading mysteries and somehow mysteries just seem to pop up wherever they go.

After these, I hope to focus on Book Two (Hunter’s Rose) of my historical western series: Troubles in the West. And on and on…

If you could vacation anywhere, where would you go?

My very favorite places are Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains and Myrtle Beach. Any stress I’m experiencing seems to melt away, and I renew my strength and perceptive.

We’ve traveled all over the United States and love so many different places. But these two remain my favorite.
