Today I'd like to welcome Caryl McAdoo. How did you develop a 'love of story'?
My love of story came all the way back to the third grade when I got saved and discovered books about horses. The former gave me a whole new perspective on the Bible stories I loved. I cared more about learning them, never tired of them.
My school librarian ordered many horse stories just for me. Marguerite Henry’s Black Gold, Black Beauty, My friend Flicka, and Misty of Chintoteague to name a few that stood out. I’d read anything horses.
English remained my favorite class throughout school--with the possible exception of choir, but that really isn’t in the same category. I loved (and still do) putting words together to make sentences and joining sentences for a paragraph. Many paragraphs create a chapter, and throw thirty chapters together…voila, you’ve got a full length novel and another great story!
You've had a love of story for quite some time. :) What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
Oooo, mercy! This is a hard one, but I’m going with Lamentations 3:23 that says my God’s lovingkindness is new every morning. What a comforting fact that is to know. No matter how bad yesterday may have been, what problem unexpectedly smacked you between the eyes, or why troubles and trials camped on your lawn…no matter what…His lovingkindness is brand toward me and you every morning! I love that <3
That's a great verse. How does your faith and spirituality work in with your writing?
I write to give God glory. He’s taught me so much as I’ve been willing to obey Him. I’m so blessed to be sixty-six now and have fifty-seven years with Him behind me. I love growing older and wiser in Him. My unwavering faith—won through so many trials and tribulations in life—in our awesome God along with all those things Holy Spirit has revealed are woven throughout the stories He gives me.
I pray my readers will see there’s no reason to ever worry, no reason to ever fear; not when they belong to and follow Him. My characters don’t believe in “luck” because His Word says clearly that ALL good things are from above…so there’s no such thing as good luck they explain, there’s only blessings from God and curses.
‘Wish’ is another word I’m deleting from my vocabulary. I refuse to wish, instead, I will pray. I used to LOVE Disney on Sunday evening when I got to stay home from church. Jiminy Cricket singing “When you wish upon a star…” WHAT, no way… I pray! You’ll be seeing that pretty soon in a novel.
:) Where did you get the inspiration for your latest book?
THE BEDWARMER’S SON has quite an insistent story of how it came about…its inspiration. I started writing a contemporary for my Red River Romance series based on the idea of The Voice titled THE PITCH. Instead of the next big singing sensation, my teams, filmed for the upcoming TV show, are looking for the next great American novelist. To write that story, as my agent/editor teams visit writers’ conferences across the nation, I needed many book titles and skeletal premises for the authors to pitch. One such title was THE BEDWARMER’S SON.
But after I left that project to finish a different story, the title would not leave me alone. It really wanted to be written badly, and let me know in a persistent way. And so the inspiration to write it appeared at least in part to be, preservation of sanity. J Or you could say it came from obedience to God, because this had to be the one He wanted me to write next.
In His time, I am ready to get back to THE PITCH, it’s a FUN story!
It sounds interesting, Caryl. What do you plan to work on next?
My next release will be book eight in the Texas Romance series, COVERING LOVE. I have three love stories going on in it, and will admit when reading the early chapters at my Red River Writers Workshop for critique that I could barely get through it for tearing up and crying, runny nose and all. It’s very sad.
But praise the Lord, storms do pass and there are also lots of fun parts that will make me smile and even chuckle. I’m on Chapter twenty-eight It debuts in January, 2017 with MIGHTY TO SAVE, book nine, following in May. My plans are for CHIEF OF SINNERS in September, book ten and the final in the family saga (maybe…probably) though more companion books are certain to follow.
Do you find it interesting that I wrote CHIEF first, almost twenty years ago? The first will be last is applicable. When Mary Sue McAdoo Seymour, my precious agent who went to live with the Lord this year, told me to write her a historical Christian romance set in the 1800s… I already knew much of CHIEF’s backstory. I used the same surnames and wrote toward the future I already knew. Fun, yes?
You definitely stay busy. Apart from writing, what is your favorite creative outlet?
Ah, remember when I mentioned God gave me new songs? Well, there you go. That’s my answer as a favorite creative outlet. I’ve started videoing my songs and uploading them to YouTube so all can go and hear some of them. Most are praise and worship, but I also have songs for each of my sixteen grandsugars, and the children’s songs that go along with the mid-grade stories. I don’t hold myself up as a great singer, but I love singing. It’s so happy!
One final question. Where can readers connect with you?
